 Library  Evolution of the looms

One of the topics that fascinate me most is human ingenuity, the fact that similar solutions to the same problem can be found in times and places far distant from one another, and conversely that very different solutions can be found in the same country. There are countless ways of tensioning and separating threads and shaping a textile object. Over forty years ago, when weaving was unheard of in Italian schools, I saw elementary school children who knew nothing about weaving literally invent the loom when confronted by the problem of how to create different sheds. This whole topic will be examined at greater depth in my site in the future. For the moment I can say that Eric Broudy’s book is a very interesting introduction to the development of the loom. The more modern studies of textiles don’t just analyze them, but deal with production instruments and techniques in relation to different kind of products. See  Looms
